Things To Know When Talking About Steel Gratings

Things To Know When Talking About Steel Gratings

Many of us know what gratings are, and what their applications are in homes and various industrial settings. However, the majority of the people do not know much about gratings or are not that well versed in the right terminology in defining, differentiating or identifying variations in gratings and its several types. This post is to help you know more about gratings, terms used in specifying or identifying its various types and specifications, and other terms that might prove helpful at some point in time.

Gratings, in general, can be defined as a framework or a grid of crossed or parallel bars, normally preventing access through an opening, while permitting communication and ventilation. This definition of gratings or grates is broad, not restricting its applications by definition. “Entry prevention” entails its applications as a structural surface, such as a wall, floor, fencing, pathway, roof, and such. Specific to gratings, these structural surfaces are nothing but a well-engineered framework, with variations in design that provide effective ventilation between compartments, with no compromise in functionality or structural capability. Although Gratings are manufactured with numerous variations, at Oasis Metal Manufacturing LLC we produce standard and shaped steel gratings, stair treads, and fixing clips.

Terms Associated with Steel Gratings

Some common terms or terminology used in reference to the specifications, types and other variations of steel gratings are:

Grating

A steel grid formed using load-bearing bars and crossed bars through resistance welding.

Span (Length of the Grating)

The span or length of the grating is measured along the direction of the load-bearing bars. Variations in the span of the gratings usually cause a difference in its load-bearing capacity.

Width of the grating

The width of the grating is the measure of distance along the direction of the cross-bars.

Plain load-bearing bar

Plain load-bearing bars are normal flat load-bearing bars, which are used to produce plain or flat surface steel gratings.

standard steel gratings

Serrated load-bearing bar

Serrated load bearing bars are flat on one side and serrated or ridged on the other. The seated edge provides the surface of serrated steel gratings, which are commonly used for their anti-slip properties as industrial flooring.

Pitch

The pitch is the center-to-center distance between two load-bearing bars or two cross bars.

Binding bar

Binding bars are flat bars used to construct a border for the framework. These flat bars are welded to shaped panels at each end and at cut-outs to form panels or tiles.

Grating Gross Area

The Gross Area of a Grating is the total area of the grating including the cut out areas. The gross area is not the net or actual area of the grating as areas that are cut out or removed are also calculated.

Grating Net Area

The Net area of a Grating is the actual area of the grating. It refers to the total or gross area, excluding (minus) the area cut out.

Cut-out

Any area of a grating that is required to be shaped and removed or cut out to allow pipes and columns to pass through is called a cut-out. A Cut-out can with be Straight Shaped- cut-out with straight edges or straight lines, or Curved Shaped – cut-out with curved lines or edges.

Toe Plate

Toe plates are large-sized flat bars which are welded to the edge of the steel gratings or grating panels, for safety and precautionary purposes.

Curb Angles

Curb angles are support fixtures that are installed onto concrete or a steel frame to support grating panels.

Erection Clearance

Erection Clearance is a permitted distance from a grating panel to an adjacent panel or structure.

Stair Tread

Stair Treads are steel gratings or panels with end plates and non-slip nosing, which are used in stairways. End plates are plates that are welded to each end of a stair tread, allowing easy installation to steelwork or a steel frame. Non-slip nosing is a special anti-slip bar, that is welded to grating panels or stair treads to provide a grippy surface and prevent slipping.

Steel Your Favourite Flora!

Steel Your Favourite Flora!

With these steel framed greenhouses, it doesn’t matter if the flowers you love can’t grow in your local climates. A little technological ingenuity backed up with some engineering excellence, ensure you can have beautiful blooms in your home all year through.

Greenhouses have long been favoured by those who aren’t too happy with allowing small inconveniences like unsuitable weather, preventing them from being able to raise and enjoy flowers and other flora of their choice. Having a privately owned greenhouse used to be a luxury that not many could afford before. But with new technological advances and better equipment, it is more accessible than ever.

For instance, at Oasis Metals, we custom make shaped gratings to your specifications to suit a wide range of requirements. If a greenhouse is what you’d like to construct, then we can fulfil all your needs.

We are happy to work with your designers for a business like a nursery or a florist, where you might need a larger greenhouse, or multiple facilities with different requirements for each one, depending on the varieties of the plants one wants to cultivate.

Our sales team would be happy to work with you to make sure that we cover all the bases of your needs.

Whether you have a home with sprawling grounds, or a small backyard that you’d like to use, we can easily provide you with the products you will need for the frame and support work.

The steel framework is sturdy enough to survive the wear and tear of a low maintenance house schedule.

It is also much more resistant to the elements than other materials and therefore lasts much longer. This translates to your money spent being an investment rather than an expense.

Most greenhouses are a frame that is then covered by a material that allows sunlight through, but contains the warmth it brings. Of course, the reverse is also true where the glass or roofing will allow the sunlight through but keep the interior at a lower temperature than the scorching ones we experience in the desert during the day. A greenhouse is meant to regulate the temperature within the structure to keep it at a regulated steady one. Sudden fluctuations could lead to the plants being destroyed, or adversely affected by the extremes of hot and cold.

It does all this while also protecting the plants inside from too much or not enough rain and other weather conditions out of our control.

The variety of greenhouses can differ from a simple roof structure to one that is temperature controlled on the inside with automated sprinklers and humidity controllers. Let Oasis Metals help you build your dream garden. Call us to know more!

Valyrian Steel

Valyrian Steel

Most of the free world and their uncle, across the globe, are currently sitting around discussing outlandish theories about the most prolific television series in the past few years. Game of Thrones. The very mention of the name itself is sometimes enough for perfect strangers to make conversation in order to discuss their opinion on the latest episode, or a particular character.

A central theme we have noticed in the show’s premise is the significance of Valyrian Steel. A mythological metal, it is presented as having mystic properties that allow characters to vanquish certain creatures, apart from being almost a ‘super-metal.’
What interested us the most about the topic was the secrecy behind the smelting of this steel, and the loss of all knowledge on how to create it. Valyrian steel was explained as being the most coveted metal in the lands. Stronger than any other known metal in the show’s universe, it is often shown to be imbued with mythical powers, a bane to the horrors the characters face. Called indestructible, the strength of the metal is a point that the characters keep circling back to ad nauseum.

In the real world, many scholars and archaeologists have drawn on the numerous similarities in properties between Valyrian steel and the historic Damascus steel. The two have many commonalities, namely, the tell tale patterns in the steel, reminiscent of flowing water; the minute differences in the shades of the metal, that make it seem like there are really two metals forged together.

The rarity of it, in the common markets. The loss of the secret behind its creation. Like its real life counterpart, Valyrian steel is primarily used in weapons, although some wealthy patrons commission it for use in crowns, like the former Targaryen king, Aerys, or the Dothraki warrior who carries an arakh, the only one of its kind showcased in the series (so far)

This representation of a different kind of metal with mystical power and legendary strength, is a clear novelty in fiction where magic is usually displayed as spells and trickery. Smoke and mirrors accompanied by much hand waving and chanting. Lightning bolts and thunderous sounds. This is a much colder and harder avatar, pun intended, that captures an audience’s attention because it is a departure from the usual.

Every single Valyrian steel weapon is customized and made to fit certain characteristics of either the house it belongs to, or the wielder of the blade itself. Sometimes those could be one and the same, since most of the blades are heirlooms passed down from one generation to the next. At Oasis metals, we believe that great metal work should be hardy enough to survive the generations, and utilitarian enough to be unaffected by trends or fashions. We customise our gratings and other steel work to suit your needs, and we work to provide you with the best products available on the market.

Steel in Art

Steel in Art

Steel is a superbly malleable metal, and yet is one of the strongest in the world. As diverse and dynamic as it is, it is widely used even in the art world. We posted about the Chicago bean a few weeks ago, and how the structure is a huge tourist attraction. It is seen, touched, and photographed by millions every year, and still manages to weather the elements as well. (Pun intended)

In that same vein, we look at how steel can be molded and interpreted as an artistic medium. When an artist is looking to showcase it’s sheer tenacity in a minimalist design, they could possible do something along the lines of Eddie Robert’s sculpture, like the one depicted below. The flow of the metal, the way it has been molded to seem like an almost effortless arch. The smooth transition from a horizontal pattern to an elegant arch that hovers above it. Seemingly weightless.

And then we have the other end of the spectrum. The GAHR stainless steel coral. A large than life piece – it is intricate and uses a gradient rarely seen in this medium. The smallest details have been brought to life in it. One can almost believe that it truly is a live piece of a coral reef. The rough edges were achieved by treating the steel with a coarse papering to ensure it looks like the reefs that inspired the piece.

The one thing both these pieces have in common is the tenacious and completely multifaceted metal that some of us don’t even realize, impacts our life in the everyday. The dulled polish effect on Robert’s piece, vs the high sheen yet rough appearance of the GAHR scuplture is just a simple focal point in an illustration on how the metal can be molded to suit one’s purposes.

At Oasis Metal, we use the steel to showcase our diverse methods of providing our clients with what they most need. Depending on your individual requirements, we provide custom gratings, with specialised treatments to suit the environments in which they will be used. Whether as an outdoor staircase to highlight a beautiful back garden, or a sturdy frame for step ladders in your factory, we have what you will most need. Reliability. We treat our steel products to be weather proof in the case of your outdoor fixtures. We reinforce them for your warehouses and factories. Most of all, we make sure that you understand that our products are enabled to provide you with peace of mind.

Why Install Steel Stair Treads

Why Install Steel Stair Treads

Steel Gratings are of immense use when it comes to floor applications. There are umpteen applications in which metal gratings are required. When used in floor application gratings provide the ventilation, proper drainage and slip resistant floors. Steel gratings are also used as stair treads and these characteristics of steel gratings make them an ideal material to be used as stair treads.

Here are some of the benefits of installing steel stair treads:

Durability: Steel stairs are durable and are built to last, and also have a high weight bearing capacity when compared to wood or other materials that are used for the manufacture of stairs. They are also ideal for outdoor applications because the climate has little or no effect on the metal. Galvanized steel is anti-corrosive and is resistant to rust.sst

No additional maintenance required: When steel stair treads are installed they do not require additional staining, varnishing or sealing and because they are resistant to changes in the temperature they will not warp or bend. This makes them ideal for both industrial and domestic applications.

sst2

Unique Designs: Steel gratings could be used to create unique designs and add to the aesthetic appeal of a building. They could be installed in curving stairs or other ornately designed staircases. Steel is a highly flexible metal and can be fabricated to almost any specification.

sst3

Cost-effective installation and maintenance: Steel gratings are fabricated and are available with the required fixing clips. If anyone is looking for an easy DIY project installing your steel stair treads could be one of them. The strength that steel stair treads provide makes them ideal for industrial applications because they are an economical and last for decades. When it comes to regular maintenance steel stair treads require little or no maintenance. Structural components of the stairs do not need to be replaced and they do not need to be painted. They are a great long term investment.

Steel is extremely durable, and our gratings are guaranteed to last you a lifetime. With several variations in design, make and finish, we can help you choose the ideal type of gratings that best suit your needs. Here are a few ways you could use our gratings to make your home unique and creative:

Outdoor Decks and Patios

Outdoor decks are usually flat elevated surfaces in a backyard or connected to a house. Using galvanized or stainless steel gratings as deck or patio surfaces is extremely practical. Although gratings are manufactured with variations in thickness and design, our steel gratings are designed to last.

Our gratings can stand the test of time, and are suitable for outdoor use, as they do not get damaged easily. Moreover, you won’t have to worry about spilling your drink, water or any other liquid on your patio or deck surface, as it would just pass through the vented floor. Steel Grating Decks and patios are also easy to maintain, giving you some ease of mind in the long run.

Driveways

Driveway floors are usually made of concrete because of its high load-bearing requirements. Heavy-duty steel gratings are specially designed and engineered to withstand heavy weights, up to 4 times that of standard gratings. Heavy-duty steel gratings are realistic, reasonable and functional alternatives to traditional concrete driveways. These are extremely practical, especially for the provision of a drainage system below, to allow water to flow when you wash your car or even if it rains.

Walkways, Pathways, and Bridges

Steel gratings are absolutely perfect when used to surface pathways, walkways, and bridges, around gardens, over backyard creeks, koi ponds and even deck-side plants. Bridges or even raised walkways can be constructed easily with a steel framework and gratings, with plants growing under them. This allows the plants to receive enough sunlight while providing you with a strong, durable, weather-resistant and easily maintainable walkway. These raised or grounded platforms can be used for multiple purposes, to lay a full drainage system under or to lead to an outdoor deck, garage or workhouse.

Balconies and Overhead planes

Balconies are protruding platforms, on the sides of buildings with access from windows and doors on upper floors. Balcones are required to have high weight-bearing capacities to bear the weight of two or more people. Using heavy duty or galvanized steel gratings for this is extremely practical. Not only do they serve their main purpose, they are also extremely appealing and a perfect blend of architectural ingenuity and modern aesthetic. Outdoor overhead planes, especially those that incorporate gratings are mainly used to filter light and provide sufficient privacy while maintaining proper open ventilation.

Some other creative home and outdoor home applications of steel gratings could also include Fire pit grill tops, Steel stairs using gratings, ramps, table tops, fencing, pool borders, tree ground borders, and much more. Stainless steel gratings are economic, durable and appealing and are well-known for their diverse applications from Industrial flooring to home decor and shower floors. To most people, the only images that come to mind with regard to steel gratings are industrial floors and other applications that we see every day like those on pavements, curbs, and parking areas. Gratings are designed to provide proper ventilation or flow of air or water, anti-slip surfaces in industries, and floor covers with low maintenance requirements.

Apart from the more traditional and common uses of steel gratings in construction, public facilities, commercial spaces, and in industrial and manufacturing establishments, and their home uses in gardens and backyards, these gratings can also be used in home kitchens, professional kitchens, bars, and breweries. Whether you’re a professional chef, a home cook, or even a normal person who has friends over for a couple of drinks or a party, and you’re tired of cleaning up when you spill something, you should consider installing floor grates with a drainage or filtration system underneath.

Uses of Steel Gratings in Kitchens

Gratings can be incorporated into your countertops, floors, or even at the entry of your pantry. Channels or narrow drains can be constructed or laid under the gratings, leading to an outlet, preventing your kitchen floor from flooding.

Bar and counter top steel gratings

Kitchen counters and bar tops are the most common places where we tend to keep out bowls, glasses, and mugs. We frequently tend to drop or knock over our glasses and bowls unintentionally, causing a mess. In other cases, leaving a cold bottle of water or a glass of cold water on a counter, causes the bottle to sweat, i.e. water to drip down the sides. Both these problems can be addressed by installing a drain channel into your kitchen counters and bar cabinets.

Counter-top Steel Gratings

These drain channels are commonly made using stainless steel to prevent it from rusting or deterring, fitted with a steel grate or custom design grating on the surface. Using Stainless steel gratings as surface covers can also add to the beauty and overall appeal of your kitchen or bar.

Floor gratings

Stainless steel gratings or floor grates can be installed in patterns or designs, incorporated into all kinds of flooring. Generally, these grates cover openings to underground drains, or drain channels, which are used to dispose of water and other liquids that spill or leak onto the kitchen floor.

Kitchen Floor Steel Gratings and Drain Channel

Floor grating strips are commonly found in almost every professional kitchen, around counters and along the middle of the floor. These steel gratings and drains not only help remove and dispose of water from the kitchen floor, it also provides an ease of cleaning up spilled soup, sauce and other liquids.

Sink Grids and Grates

Sick grids and grates are must-haves if you like to spend your time in the kitchen and do your own dishes. Sink grids are steel grates or thick mesh grids that elevate items in your sink so that the drain does not get blocked. Sink cover steel gratings are like typical sink covers with integrated steel gratings. These extend your countertops over sinks to provide you with more workspace in the kitchen, with grates to allow water to drain into the sink.
